Capestudios Banner Handmade Decorative Relief Ceramic Art Tiles

"Your Tiles Specially Made For You "

About me

The Inspiration for my work comes from the surroundings in which I live
The Beautiful Cornish Coast

Cape Cornwall

The exeptionaly clean natural light, the colours, tones and textures of the rugged landscape, throughout the changing seasons, all have a great influence on my work.
From the dry textured finishes and the subtle colours and tones .Through to the light and shadows created on the finished pieces, all of this combines to create an earthy and natural style. Which compliments and enhances the suroundings they are in .

My Tiles

The relief sculpted designs can be viewed from many angles and the glazes catch the light showing the rich colours and hues, revealing the wonderful depth and detail of the carving beneath and the light that is cast across them creates changing shadows which enhances their apearance as well.

All my tiles are hardwearing, frost proof and have holes in the back from which they can be strung
enabling them to be hung on their own as works of art, This means means they also make the perfect Gift .
Impervious to water, heat or sunlight and easy to clean, they are perfectly suited to places where other art might be damaged.
This also makes them ideally suited to being placed outside to create that focal point in your Yard or Garden.
In addition Some of my designs can also be adapted to create a stunning water feature.

My work can be found in many homes and buisnesses across America and Europe .
Giving that unique and individual touch to your Bathroom, Kitchen, Fireplace, Stairway, Entrance Hall or Garden.

Glazes

All my glazes are carefully prepared and mixed to my own recipes which have been developed over several years.
With glaze finishes ranging from a stone like finish, dry in texture and with subtle mottled colour variations in a variety of colours.
An unglazed finish showing the clay in its natural state or with a wash high lighting the relief design and the texture of the clay. To a satin gold and a satin white glaze with a smooth semi gloss surface

Working in Clay

Each of my decorative tiles is first sculpted from a fine dense clay, to get the best depth of definition, each of these master tiles takes approximately 6 to 9 hours to model, depending on thier design. These are then left to dry for 36 hours to a certain consistency ,when the tile is ready, a plaster block case mould is taken in which the master tile rarely survives.

From this further tiles can then be pressed from this cast, using a heavily groged clay to give texture and strength. Each hand pressed tile is carefully finished and then left to dry, sometimes taking up to 3 weeks. When the tiles are completely dry, they are placed in the Kiln to be fired to a high temperature, to form bisque ware The tiles are then glazed using my own recipes with every tile glazed by hand.

They are then loaded into the Kiln again ,where they are fired to an even higher temperature, which takes around 15 hours . After the Kiln has been allowed to cool, it is carefully unpacked .Leaving the finished tiles very hard wearing and frost resitant

My Sculptures are all individually designed and then carefully hand sculpted, with some pieces taking up to 3 or 4 weeks to form .They are then left to air dry and then fired to form bisque ware . Each piece is then seperately glazed and once again placed in the Kiln to give a truly unique and individually work of art.

I hope you enjoy looking at my Tiles and Sculptures as much as I love making them happy browsing
